Manowar golf clubs? Denied!

Posted in METAL News on January 31st, 2006

From the Trademark Trial and Appeal blog:

Third-party registration evidence led the Board to affirm a Section 2(d) refusal of the mark MAN O’WAR for golf clubs, golf balls, golf bags, and various other items of golf equipment. The Board found a likelihood of confusion with the registered mark MANOWAR (Stylized) (shown immediately below) for t-shirts and hats.

…the Board concluded that the marks are similar, the goods related, and the channels of trade the same or overlapping. It therefore affirmed the refusal to register.

Pardon me while I laugh my ass of and collapse from lack of oxygen…

Malaysian Fatwa Council bans “black metal”

Posted in METAL News on January 24th, 2006

Via The Jerusalem Post

Islamic officials in Malaysia ruled Monday that “black metal” music was unacceptable for Muslims, saying it can cause listeners to rebel against religion.

Black metal is akin to hard rock music, but often uses occult imagery and lyrics. It emerged in Europe in the early 1980s and has made inroads in Southeast Asia in recent years, though its popularity has remained limited to underground rock fans.

New Witchery Song Available, Cover Art Posted

Posted in beMETAL on January 12th, 2006

This just in from Century Media:

WITCHERY’s first spell, “Plague Rider,” from their upcoming album Don’t Fear The Reaper, has been posted here. Scheduled for North American release March 21st, the album was recorded at Berno Studios (Amon Amarth, Dark Funeral) in 2004, with mixing duties entrusted to Tue Madsen and his Antfarm Studios (The Haunted, Heaven Shall Burn). Chilling original artwork by David Diaz (P.O.D.) has been posted here. The North American release features an exclusive track, a cover version of Satanic Slaughter’s classic “Legion Of Hades.”

It’s about damn time we had some new Witchery!

Pandora’s Music Box

Posted in METAL News on January 9th, 2006

So have you heard about Pandora yet?

This is seriously cool stuff.

Just go to the site, enter a band name, and it will dynamically create a streaming radio station based on the style of that band. In other words, it recommends music to you based on the style of music you provide. In the image above, I went easy on it and just entered ‘Slayer’. Of course, it starts by playing “The Final Command” off Show No Mercy, followed by Immortal and Sepultura. All in 128k stereo mp3 format. Oh yeah, did I mention it’s free?

Not too fucking shabby if you ask me.

In theory, you can create an account on the site, login, create as many “stations” as you want, custom tailored to your preferences (you can rate the songs it plays), and access them from any computer in the world! Even email the stations you create to friends!

This puts my old beMETAL station to shame, to say the least.

Now, of course, they’re a bit lacking in the underground metal areas. Don’t expect to hear any Ensiferum or Arsis, at least not yet.

I think it’s pretty damn impressive. I can see this becoming an extremely powerful tool with which to find new music.

If you want to check out the “station” I just threw together, click here.

Check it out, and feel free to post stations you create in the comments!

Oh yeah, if you feel like hearing how the site came to be, and everything that goes into it (believe me, there’s a lot), check out this interview.

Carbonado Archives Return

Posted in beMETAL on January 3rd, 2006

Well, I finally got around to re-uploading the archives of the Carbonado comic!

Now you can enjoy classics like Know the Power of thy Sword (Part 1), Part 2, and Bort’s Curse! And of course, some of my personal favorites, such as Troy is “yort” Backwards, Keep Away from Children, and the infamous Confrontation!

For those who don’t know, Carbonado was an original metal webcomic that ran for a few months in 2004. More information can be found in the archives.
