“Metaler” girl stabbed in eye

by Jim on Aug.31, 2006, under METAL News

From telegraph.co.uk:

A teenager who was stabbed in the eye during her school lunch break said a “gang mentality” singled out pupils for their music and fashion tastes.

The 15-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, narrowly escaped losing her sight in the attack last November.

She had been the victim of a string of attacks, threats and had even received prank calls at home because she is what is known as “a metaler”, Guildford Crown Court heard today.

The victim explained in a police interview shown to the court how she had been “forced into a category” on her first day at the school.

“Somebody asked me on the first day what kind of music I listened to, so I said AC/DC.”

She said that, as a result of this, she was told she was a “metaler” and found herself being shunned by other classmates.

Come on, AC/DC? I mean, at least she didn’t say Kiss…

In other news, this is my first post in over 2 months, does anyone still read this? If so, I apologize.

This is my alternate, more personal source for metal news. It has something a little more home-grown than all the other ‘big name’ metal sites (I suppose that is why it is a blog). In regards to the article, if someone singled out “pupils”, my eye would be the first thing that would come to mind. Feel bad for that “Australianhardrocker.”

  2. Blue

    I still read, certainly.

Anyways, holy christ, that’s quite unfortunate. I wonder what music the assailants listen to.

  3. Jim

Good question! Glad to see people still read. I’ll put more effort into finding interesting metal stories for y’all.

  4. Natashia Jackman

I feel the need to say that ACDC was the first bad i listened to, that is the only reason i stated it. although i do enjoy them, my taste has grown into actual metal, rather than rock. thank you for showing concern all the same.

    kind regards - N Jackman

hmm I’ll go out on a limb here and say they listen to rap just because a go 70 - 80% of they people did when I was at the age group and I was a little singled out by my friends for listening to metal myself but thats just a guess

    I read here,,, sometimes..

I think it happens everywhere, that “metalheads” kids are being singled out because the music they like,
but some times there are many metalheads in the same school so it happens the other wayaround and more kids want to be “cool” like them so they start listening to metal.

  7. douchebag

I was the “creepy” kid who sat in the corner by himself at school. yeah heavy metal, gruesome shirts. i was feared.

  8. Magic

I was never feared but not one of my friends liked metal so I was a bit of an out cast because of that. Stupid friends and their shitty taste in music :P

Here in Israel there are different cultures and people and metalers usually get their ass kicked and are also shunned and so on unless they are tough or know the right (or wrong ) people .
God this is so stupid I don’t give half a crap about people like that
and I don’t judge people by the music they hear but from personal experience I got into a couple of troublesome situations myself because I looked like a metaler (which I am by the way =p)
but this days a wear regular clothing and not only black and etc because I feel better with myself this way
and when you live like this you developed some kind of street smart or street wise .
    its really sad though

Well, I just followed a very old link in my webcomic links folder here. That of course being Carbonado. Speaking of which, it was the only good metal webcomic online….I think it was so good they made a freakin’ show about it on Adult Swim. If Metalocalypse isn’t Carbonado in animated form, I don’t know what is! ;) But really, Metalocalypse, holy shit, metalheads across the States are worshipping this show. It’s pretty god damned wonderful. Truly.

Is it just me, or did anyone notice the actual girl who this article was about, “Natashia Jackman” apparently, just posted a response to it explaining why AC/DC and metal were linked? That’s pretty groovy. On that note, however, the media is HORRIBLE when it comes to anything underground, counter-culture, or just downright cool. They get everything wrong and twist things to make them more family friendly. If someone had told the media that they had said they were into “Hypocrisy, Death, Quo Vadis, Opeth, and AC/DC” the reporter would pick out the only one their silly, ignorant, non-metal mind knew of and just list that.

I guess since we’re all listing our status of outcast-ness in highschool for being what’s usually 1 of only 3 or 4 true metallers in the entire school (which was definitely the case at mine), I wasn’t picked on for any such thing and I’ve been a thrasher since 12 (now 23). No one cared. At my highschool, there were the geeks, freaks, and gamers(D&D and such), which is what us few metalheads fit into, and they all pretty much hung out with eachother. Maybe there were enough of us that no one bothered to fuck with us. Maybe people were just smart and realized we didn’t include even 5% of the drug dealers, trouble-makers, and general pricks at the school. Most of the time, we were the artistic, liberal-minded, bright students that teachers liked and, like I said, the other students (jocks, preps, whatever) just didn’t care one way or the other.

Speaking of nerds and metal, check out my band’s somewhat-listenable live recordings at http://www.myspace.com/squarepegroundhole We’re kind of a cross between Primus, Voivod, System of A Down, and circus music. Heavy nerdcore at it’s finest… yes, that’s a genre… yes, we just made it up.

I totally have no idea what sort of ‘grouping’ and methods of retalliation kids are trying to impress upon each other these days. It seems odd that what was once a trivial situation back in my day has not ended in the new generation’s breed of ignorance.

Seems that it used to be thought that the metalheads, such as myself, were the ones that caused chaos and disruption. Nowadays, the tables have been turned possibly based on the sins of the fathers back in our heyday. I never thought that our genre or culture actually set a scale of ignorance, but rather formed an allience of sorts to stand out form those who didn’t understand.

No matter what way you look at it, its just another form of social bias and lack of proper parental guidance. We have allowed our children too many ways to add conflict and chaos to an already unrelenting world. Where do we go from here?

I’m from Belgium and I must say that people(read:younger people) will always discriminate or fear that which is different. I turned 20 this year and am going to college. There the “discrimination” has ended… at least mainly.
Anyway in my neighbourhood there’s an “anti-metalhead” feeling. I’m not saying there aren’t any besides me, but I’ve experienced something alike before.
When I still went to high school, other students (read:classmates) ignored every single word I said because I’m a metalhead and that’s automatically pagan in their eyes.
Another thing that bugged me recently when I went to say hello to the few nice ppl at my old school, was that there were a few hip hoppers and gabbers outside the gates. They wanted to beat me because I’ve got long hair, a leather jacket and a bandshirt. They started calling me “satanist” because I wore black. but then, when they started coming towards me, one of the guy noticed I had blue jeans on. Then they retreated and said “he’s not a satanist, he wears blue jeans”.
Since when do clothes show whether or not people believe in something or not? Okay pirest robes and such exist, but regular clothes.
After that, they went and one guy was left over. He came towards me with begging eyes and asked me if I would sell him weed.
The point is: metalheads, goths, punks,… will probably always be “discriminated” by the mainstream. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any exceptions.

off topic: this is my first comment on this website, but that doesn’t mean I hardly ever visit ;) I listen every week ^^ or at least try to :)
and ehm… Jim, my b-date is the same as yours, only a few years after ;)

Hell i wish i could say i cant beleive some of this shit, but im not even in highschool and im getting this sort of stuff, called goth/emo chic in class, the teachers look for any reason to give me suspension and such, and of course the fights
last year i had someone who was just being such an ass to me that i broke his ankle and i didnt try to or start it, i just took it for a while until he had a few more join in and eventually i just snapped
this year its more of a nuiscensce (sorry i know thats far from right spelling) and name calling being made fun of but its still shit that i dont like at all
last year i wore camoflauge and just whatever i found in my room, this year ive got 2 pairs of pants i can wear both those hot topic style and its made things worse as far as the # of people go who are pricks, being nice, staying quiet just makes it worse

Why do so many people have to just single out a few people every year like this?
    Every year?
i know that it isnt just people who dress in dark colors per say or dont talk much too though but still i was even singled out in elementry school before i wore a strip of black every day or even week
